Hungary places great focus on university sport

Since its foundation, the Hungarian University Sports Federation (HUSF) has always placed great importance on university sport in Hungary. HUSF is keen to organise university sports events in order to increase Hungarian university students' involvement in sport and it is proud to host the upcoming European Universities Bridge and Chess Championship.

The Hungarian University Sports Federation (HUSF), first of its kind in Europe, was founded as early as 1907. It organised the World University Games in 1935, 1949 and 1954. With the foundation of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) in 1959, as one of its members HUSF played a significant role in the international university sports life. The 1965 Universiade took place in Budapest, and in the last decades, HUSF has organised fourteen World University Championships in different sports and games.

HUSF places strong emphasis upon giving Hungary a chance to organise international university sports events in order to increase Hungarian universities’ and the country’s international reputation. HUSF is very proud to host the European Universities Bridge and Chess Championship in Budapest, while being Europe’s Sports Capital in 2019 at the same time.

HUSF President Prof. Dr. Ádám Kisstruly hopes that some of the Hungarian competitors will become as well-known as Judit Polgár, Lajos Portisch and Gábor Kállai, the latest being known as a coach and a sport leader.

This outstanding event is a worthy forerunner of the FISU Forum to be held at the University of Physical Education, Budapest in 2020.
